Cloe Whittaker and Tyson Jerry set out to prove to the world that you don’t need to rely on fossil fuels to travel great distances but you can travel exclusively without them and travel as far as the equivalent distance of the Earth’s circumference (and then some).  They drove 48,535 km (30,158 mi) throughout North America using pure waste vegetable oil.  This mileage took them into the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Longest Journey by Car Using Alternative Fuel.”   The goal of this project they named Driven to Sustain was to raise awareness for environmental issues and useful alternatives.  Amongst their messages they also demonstrated how low-impact alternatives to fossil fuels are a viable solution on the road to achieving environmental sustainability.  They presented at hundreds of schools and conferences along their journey speaking to over 10,000 students and tens of millions through the media airwaves.

Cloe, Tyson, and the vegetable oil-fuelled van visited nearly every biome in North America and encountered almost every driving condition these regions could muster.  The van succeeded in the range of conditions from -30 °C (-22 °F) in the snowy Alaskan mountain passes to 40 °C (105 °F) weather in the hot deserts of US and Mexico.  As they drove over 8,000 km (4,970 mi) greater than circumference of the earth, you can bet they encountered many weather patterns in between!

The Timeline:

After the first idea of the project was conceived in 2004, the couple began their Driven to Sustain journey October 1st, 2008.  For 80 days, they drove into the northern territories, across Canada, and then headed due south aiming for Florida.  After 19,697 km, the van slipped a timing belt in South Carolina and concluded the end of their first attempt on December 16th, 2008.

The second attempt was underway on November 12th, 2009.  After driving 175 days, Tyson and Cloe concluded their journey on May 4th, 2010 at 48,535 km (30,158 mi) breaking the previous record by over 10,000 km (6,214 mi).

The entire expedition spanned 255 days took them into 3 different countries, 6 provinces, 2 territories, and over 35 states.

Driven to Sustain project was made possible by 105 corporate and individual sponsors, and could not have achieved its goal without the help of numerous supporters. Companies, organizations, and government sponsors include Babble On Communications, Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, New York Fries, Veg Systems, Artificial Flavour, Rocky Mountain Imports, Sierra Club Of British Columbia, Clean Cities Tucson, EDG, and Taco Time.

Time after time, Whittaker and Jerry were welcomed into people’s homes, fed, given a bed, offered showers, provided with groceries and supplies, and often simply encouraged by thousands of people across Canada and the U.S. Driven to Sustain was even welcomed into hundreds of garages across North America to fill up on waste vegetable oil, new/expired vegetable oil, and biodiesel.  For that, they would like thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

Driven to Sustain still exists today and has future plans to encourage awareness, develop magazine features, publish books, and make this world an all around better place! Stay tuned for exciting news and updates, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter

To promote environmental sustainability through giving presentations at schools and visiting ecologically sound initiatives while advocating sustainable living in the media across North America.

Convert a diesel vehicle to burn 100% waste vegetable oil and begin driving.  Prior to our departure date we arranged for New York Fries to reserve their waste grease.  Upon our arrival our aim is to acquire the oil at multiple spots quickly, filter the oil, and get back on the road promptly.  The entire journey will be filmed to create a documentary, or possibly a television series, upon our return.  The filming will encompass the world record but will focus on critical environmental issues, how you are linked to these issues, and how you can advocate positive change.
